How to Keep Your Mother of the Bride Dress from Wrinkling
You've found the perfect mother of the bride dress. It fits beautifully, the color is just right, and you feel amazing in it. Now comes the tricky part—keeping it wrinkle-free until the big day. Trust me, there's nothing worse than pulling your dress out of the closet the morning of the wedding only to find it looks like you stored it in a gym bag.
Here's what actually works when it comes to preventing wrinkles, based on real experience (and a few hard-learned lessons).
Store It the Right Way
How you hang your dress matters more than you'd think. Use a padded hanger—those thin wire ones from the dry cleaner will create shoulder dimples that are impossible to steam out. If your dress came with a garment bag, use it. It protects against dust and helps the fabric breathe, which prevents that musty smell and keeps wrinkles at bay. Give your dress some space in the closet. When dresses are crammed between other clothes, they get creased. If closet space is tight, consider hanging it on the back of a door or in a guest room closet until the wedding.
What to Do If You're Traveling
Traveling with a formal dress is stressful, but it doesn't have to end in disaster. If you're flying, carry it on—never check it. Fold it carefully with tissue paper between the layers, or better yet, ask the flight attendants if they can hang it in their closet. Most are happy to help for weddings. Driving to the venue? Hang your dress in the back seat using the handle above the door. Keep it in the garment bag and lay a sheet over it to protect from sun exposure, which can fade certain fabrics.
The Night Before: Your Game Plan
Don't wait until the morning of to deal with wrinkles. The night before, hang your dress in the bathroom while you take a hot shower. The steam works wonders on light wrinkles without any risk of scorching the fabric. Just don't hang it too close to the water—you want steam, not a soaking. If you have a garment steamer, even better. Use it on a low setting and work from top to bottom, holding the steamer a few inches away from the fabric. For delicate materials like chiffon or silk, place a thin cloth between the steamer and the dress.
Emergency Fixes That Actually Work
Wrinkle-release spray is your friend. Pack a travel-size bottle in your bag. Spray lightly, then smooth the fabric with your hands. It won't fix deep creases, but it handles minor wrinkles surprisingly well. If you're at the venue and notice a wrinkle, hang the dress in a steamy bathroom for 15 minutes. No bathroom? A damp washcloth pressed gently against the wrinkle (from the inside of the dress) can help in a pinch.
Fabrics That Wrinkle Less
If you haven't bought your dress yet and wrinkles are a major concern, look for fabrics like jersey, crepe, or certain blends that naturally resist wrinkling. Silk and linen, while gorgeous, wrinkle if you even look at them wrong.
The bottom line? A little planning goes a long way. Store your dress properly, handle travel carefully, and keep a steamer handy. You've got enough to think about on wedding day—your dress shouldn't be one of them.
