Your Dress Arrived and the Fit Is Off: What to Do Next

por May Song 12 Oct 2026

Your dress has arrived, but it does not feel quite right. Before booking alterations or trying a quick fix, take a moment to work out where the fit is off.

A loose neckline, a tight waist and a hem that catches under your shoes are different problems. Some may be adjustable; others need advice from the seller before you change anything. You do not need to diagnose the construction yourself. A careful try-on and a few clear notes are a useful place to start.

First steps at a glance

What you notice What to check Next step
The dress feels tight Where it pulls, whether the closure works without force, and whether you can sit comfortably Do not force the closure; document the issue and ask for advice
The dress feels loose Whether the bodice slips, the waist sits correctly, and straps or ties are adjusted as intended Ask whether the construction allows a suitable adjustment
The hem feels too long Length in your planned shoes, including walking rather than standing alone Have a tailor assess the hem before cutting or using adhesive
The item or construction seems wrong Order details, size label, closure, seams and visible damage Contact the seller before altering or cleaning the dress

Try the dress on under realistic conditions

Use the shoes and underwear you plan to wear

Try on the dress in a clean indoor space with your event shoes and intended bra, shapewear or slip. Different undergarments can change how a bodice sits. They should support a comfortable fit, not be used to squeeze into a dress that restricts breathing or movement.

Keep tags and packaging while you assess the fit. Avoid makeup transfer, perfume and outdoor wear during the check.

Check movement, not just the mirror

Stand naturally, sit, take a few steps and move your arms within the range you expect at the event. Notice whether the neckline slips, seams pull, the waist digs in or the skirt limits your stride. A dress that looks fine in one pose may still need attention.

Do not force a zip or pull on delicate trim

If a closure catches or will not meet comfortably, stop. A stuck zip can have a construction problem rather than a sizing problem. Ask someone to help you check the area without tugging, and photograph it if you need to contact the seller.

Describe the fit problem before measuring

“It does not fit” is difficult to assess remotely. A specific observation is more useful: “The waist feels comfortable, but the neckline gaps when I stand naturally,” or “The zip closes, but the hips pull when I sit.”

Compare with the correct order information

For a standard size, check the size you ordered against the applicable size chart. For a custom order, check the measurements actually submitted. Do not assume the order confirmation contains every measurement; if something is missing, ask customer service to confirm the details.

Body and garment measurements are not interchangeable

A dress measurement is not necessarily meant to equal your body measurement. Ease, stretch, lining, boning and the intended silhouette affect the comparison. Curved bust cups and draped fabric also make a simple flat measurement less reliable.

Follow the seller's measurement instructions if they ask for garment measurements. Lay the dress without stretching it, show the tape's starting and finishing points, and state whether you recorded a flat width or a full circumference. Do not double a flat measurement unless that method is requested and appropriate for the garment.

There is no universal handmade-dress tolerance

Do not dismiss discomfort or a substantial discrepancy simply because a dress is handmade. Any stated tolerance needs to come from the relevant product or order guidance, including which measurement it applies to. If you are unsure, send your observations and ask for clarification.

Check length from the right reference point

A body hollow-to-floor measurement is not the same as the distance from a dress neckline to its hem. Strapless, asymmetric and high-neck designs start at different points. Check the original measurement instructions and any heel allowance actually agreed for your order rather than assuming a fixed amount was added.

What might a tailor be able to adjust?

A fitting appointment can help you understand the options, but ask the seller first if you are reporting a possible order or construction issue. Request a quote, a completion date and an explanation of what the alteration would change before authorising the work.

A loose bust or waist

A neckline and bodice need to be assessed together. The silhouette alone does not show whether an alteration will be simple.

A tailor may be able to take in a bodice, but the work depends on seam placement, lining, boning, closures and decoration. A roomy skirt does not necessarily mean the fitted bodice is easy to change.

A hem that is too long

Bring your event shoes to the fitting. Ask how the proposed change affects the lining, layers, train and any border decoration. Do not cut the hem or apply tape or glue while you are still deciding how to resolve the fit issue.

Straps, sleeves and neckline position

Adjusting a strap can change the position of the whole bodice, including the bust cups and waist. Sleeve alterations can affect movement and shoulder fit. Have the dress assessed as a whole rather than treating each area separately.

A dress that is too small

Whether a dress can be let out depends on usable seam allowance and construction. There is no reliable amount that applies to every gown. Ask a tailor to inspect it without unpicking anything if you still need the seller to assess the original condition.

Lace, beading and layered details

An embellished bodice may require specialist alteration work. This image illustrates construction, not a fault or a before-and-after result.

Decoration crossing a seam may need to be repositioned, and several skirt layers may need separate adjustments. Ask whether the tailor has experience with similar formalwear and what appearance or finish can realistically be preserved.

When to contact customer service first

If the wrong item or size arrived, there is visible damage, a closure appears faulty, or the fit differs from what you expected based on the order details, contact the seller before authorising alterations.

Explain what you have checked and ask what information they need. Do not arrange a return shipment or assume alteration costs will be covered without confirmation. For Misshow orders, review the current refund policy and FAQs for the applicable process. This article does not set a return deadline, eligibility rule or reimbursement promise.

Include your event date so customer service understands the timing. Ask for the next step in writing, especially if it involves alterations, shipping or additional costs.

A message you can send about the fit

Hello, my order [order number] arrived on [date]. I ordered [style and size, or custom measurements]. The issue is [specific area and what happens during a normal try-on]. I checked it with [planned shoes and underwear] and have attached photos of [the fit, label or affected area]. The dress has not been altered or cleaned. My event is on [date]. Please confirm what you need to assess it and what I should do before making any changes.

Edit the message to reflect the dress's actual condition. If you have already altered, cleaned or worn it, explain exactly what was done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a handmade dress being one or two inches different always normal?

No universal range applies to every dress or measurement. Check the guidance relevant to your order and ask the seller to explain a discrepancy. Comfort and intended fit still matter.

Why does the dress feel wrong when the measurements seem right?

Measurements do not describe every aspect of fit. Torso length, bust-cup position, shoulder fit, lining and the intended silhouette can all matter. Record where the dress pulls, slips or restricts movement rather than relying on numbers alone.

Should I book alterations immediately?

Not if you are raising a possible order or quality issue. Contact the seller first. If you choose alterations, get a tailor's assessment, quote and timeline before approving the work.

Can every tight dress be made larger?

No. Usable seam allowance, fabric and construction determine whether letting it out is possible. A tailor needs to inspect the garment.

Does a long dress always include an allowance for heels?

Do not assume so. Check the product's measurement instructions and the details agreed for your order. Assess the hem in your intended shoes.

What photos are useful for a fit enquiry?

Clear front, side and back views in a natural stance, plus close-ups of the affected area and size label, can help. Ask customer service what they need, and share only images you are comfortable sending.

Before you decide: your fit checklist

  • Confirm the ordered item, size and any submitted measurements.
  • Try the dress with your planned shoes and underwear without forcing the closure.
  • Note exactly where it feels tight, loose, low or long.
  • Take clear photos and keep tags, packaging and order details.
  • Contact the seller before changing the dress if you are reporting a possible problem.
  • If alterations are the agreed route, confirm cost, feasibility and timing before work starts.

You do not have to decide immediately whether the dress needs tailoring or a different resolution. Start by documenting what is happening, then choose the next step with clear information rather than a rushed fix.
